In place of the current Bragança there was a fort, which was used by Romans, Visigoths, Swabians and towns that also left their marks in the history of the population.

The initial settlement disappeared because of the destruction caused by the struggles for conquest, it was later restored by D. Fernando Mendes in the year 1130 on top of a hill where now stands the Citadel, the historic center of Bragança .
